Peter Collis
Peter Collis' artistic journey has been a quest for perfection in crafting vessels and orbs—wheel-thrown creations whose exquisite forms come alive under the play of light.
Throughout his career, the challenges of working with clay, glaze, and fire have captivated Collis, urging him to delve deeper into understanding the materiality of ceramics. As his fascination grows, he relentlessly explores different clays and glazes, pushing these materials to their very limits.
In his latest works, Collis employs Soft Paste porcelain or Frita, a transformative medium that blends all the elements he has honed over the past decade. This translucent material boasts a soft, self-glazed surface, allowing him to extend the open tracery of his renowned Waka series into more abstract forms, guided by the graceful trailing of this gentle clay. During firing, this material exhibits minimal "body" and follows the tradition of collapsing forms, gracefully slumping to create one-of-a-kind pieces of exceptional delicacy. The interplay of negative spaces and the shadows they cast become as significant as the clay objects themselves, evoking an ethereal beauty that captivates the beholder.
